1. About the Terry MBA

1.1. Which departments in the Terry College are nationally recognized?

Several departments have achieved national recognition. Insurance/Risk Management and Real Estate are both ranked in the top five nationally, while MIS and Accounting are ranked 17th and 18th, respectively, by U.S. News & World Report. Among public business schools, the Terry MBA Program has been consistently rated a top 20 program. In addition, Terry's program has been labeled a "Best Buy" by The Financial Times of London.

1.2. Will I be able to specialize in more than one area?

Yes. In the second year of the program, students create a personal program of study that develops a high degree of technical competence in his/her chosen field(s). Departmental course offerings may be mixed and matched across all functional areas to develop a program of study that meets the personal career objectives of the student. Students may choose electives from the following areas:

Please note: Courses are not guaranteed to be offered every semester. Courses are available by student demand and faculty availability.

1.3. How many students are typically in the incoming MBA class?

Approximately 50 students are admitted each year to the two-year program and approximately 50 students to the 11-month accelerated program each summer.

2. Program Structure

2.1. How is Terry's two-year program structured?

Designed for non-business majors, the two-year program consists of 55.5 hours of full-time graduate study over four semesters. In addition, students implement a Leadership Development Plan with the assistance and guidance of a professional executive coach and participate in Terry's "MBA P.L.U.S." program to develop the "soft" skills that are critical in the business world, but not traditionally developed in the classroom.

The first year of study consists of foundation business courses that lay the groundwork for developing students' abilities to comprehend, apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate business problems and solutions. A summer internship is strongly encouraged.

In the second year, students create a personal program of study. Departmental course offerings may be mixed and matched across all functional areas to develop a program that meets the personal career objectives of the student. Although you do not necessarily have a specific concentration, you will choose your electives in your area of interest.

2.2. How does the 11-month program differ from the two-year program?

The 11-month accelerated program is designed for students who already hold an undergraduate degree in business from an institution accredited by AACSB International, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. During the summer semester, 11-month students review core business concepts; by virtue of a candidate's undergraduate training in business, the first year core requirements are "waived." Beginning fall semester, 11-month students join the second year students and start their personalized program of study. The program consists of 43 hours, three semesters, of full-time study with summer semester enrollment. As with all MBA students, 11-month students participate in all MBA P.L.U.S. activities.

2.3. Does Terry offer opportunities to study abroad?

The Terry MBA program offers international exchange and study abroad programs as well as international trips ranging from 7-14 days in length, scheduled at spring break or at the end of spring semester. Trips include in-country company visits, lectures, and cultural exposure. Participation satisfies the global business course requirement. In addition, Terry MBAs compete for international summer internships organized through Terry's International Business Program.

3. Qualifications for Admission

3.1. How do you evaluate candidates for admission?

Admission is highly selective and seeks individuals best able to meet the academic challenges of the program as well as the professional demands of the business community.

The MBA program seeks to bring together a student body whose members cover a broad spectrum of skills, backgrounds, and experiences. Terry evaluates each file on its individual merits as it relates to the goals and purpose of our program. Each applicant is assessed relative to the overall pool of applicants.

Selection combines an evaluation of an applicant's scholastic ability, interpersonal skills, career performance, and management potential. This includes a review of academic transcripts, essays, GMAT & TOEFL scores, work experience, collegiate/professional honors and activities, recommendation letters, and the interview.

3.2. What is the average GMAT?

667

3.3. What is the average undergraduate GPA?

3.36

3.4. What is the average work experience, in years, of admitted candidates?

4.9 years

3.5. Do you require previous business work experience?

Yes, we continue to place increased selective pressure on work experience. Candidates with less than two years of full-time post-baccalaureate work experience should expect their chances of admission to be limited.

3.6. Does co-op or internship experience count towards professional work experience?

While co-op and internship experiences do not count towards the traditional work experience requirement, those applicants with limited work experience must be able to distinguish their candidacy in other areas, which may include co-op and/or internship experience.

3.7. What is the average age of admitted candidates?

28 years

3.8. How many applications do you receive each year?

It varies each year. Over the past two years we have averaged approximately 375 applications per year.

3.9. To qualify for admission, how well must international applicants score on the TOEFL exam?

International applicants must achieve a minimum total score in the 85th percentile on the TOEFL. In addition, sections scores must be as follows: listening, 90%; writing, 85%; and reading, 85%. This, however, is not the sole criterion for admission, and receipt of these scores will not guarantee admission.

3.10. Can I waive the TOEFL requirement?

Applicants who have received degrees from accredited institutions in the U.S. or from institutions in countries where English is the primary language (e.g., the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand) usually are not required to submit TOEFL scores.

If such an applicant received his/her degree more than two years prior to application to Terry and has been residing or working in a country where the primary language is not English, he/she will be required to submit current TOEFL scores.

Students who are currently enrolled and have been enrolled at least one year at a regionally accredited U.S. institution may have the TOEFL requirements waived if their work shows a strong quality of performance.

Some departments may require the TOEFL regardless of previous educational experience. In such cases, the department will notify the applicant directly.

3.11. What if I have taken the TOEFL or GMAT more than once?

Terry will consider the higher of your scores for those tests taken within a year of the semester for which you are applying.

3.12. Can I transfer into your full-time MBA program?

Terry's full-time programs do not accept transfer credit.

3.13. What are your prerequisite course requirements?

While prerequisite course work is not required, candidates are expected to demonstrate strong mathematical skills and enter the program computer proficient. In addition, Terry reserves the right to require students to take Calculus prior to enrollment.

3.14. Do I need to own a computer?

Yes, all students are required to own a laptop computer. Because all seats in the MBA classrooms have Internet and wireless connections, students will find this requirement to be of great benefit. The portability of a laptop facilitates teamwork and enables students to acquire mobile computing skills.
