Terry MBA Mentoring Program

The MBA Mentoring Program creates collaborative relationships between experienced Terry MBA alumni and students in the current MBA graduating class. These relationships do not "get students a job," rather they open doors to networking opportunities that allow students to learn about a particular industry, the day-to-day responsibilities in a particular functional area and position, and the culture and potential fit with companies of interest to them, as well as to open doors to unadvertised hiring needs within an organization. Participants develop these relationships to the level they deem appropriate.

Mentee (Student) Role and Responsibilities

A mentee is a graduating Terry MBA student who is motivated and takes responsibility for his/her own professional development and growth. Mentees respect and value their relationships with mentors. As a mentee, you will:

  • Initiate contact with your mentor
  • Learn about specific jobs, career paths, corporate cultures, and industries
  • Receive advice related to your career path
  • Accept feedback without becoming defensive
  • Communicate with your mentor on a regular basis (i.e. 1-3 hours per month)
  • Be realistic about your expectations of your mentor
  • Understand your mentor's expectations
  • Plan and set the agenda for each meeting
  • Explore opportunities presented by your mentor
  • Thank your mentor for his/her time regularly

Mentor (Alumni) Roles and Responsibilities

Mentors will advise and coach a mentee on the transition from B-school to work, networking, careers, and industries. Mentors respect and value their relationships with mentees. As a mentor, you will:

  • Share your knowledge about education, specific jobs, career paths, corporate cultures, and industries
  • Honestly describe the steps you have taken in your career. What has been successful for you and what would you have done differently?
  • Create an open and comfortable environment
  • Clearly communicate your expectations of your mentee
  • Be available to your mentee and communicate regularly with him/her (i.e. 1-3 hours per month)
  • Be an active listener with your mentee
  • Be aware of opportunities that your mentee should explore and encourage him/her to explore them
  • Introduce your mentee to business associates and facilitate networking

Shared Responsibilities (Mentor and Mentee)

Appreciate and respect the relationship that exists between you. Trust and openness are essential to a strong relationship. Confidentiality and integrity are requirements for success.

  • Determine the appropriate level of structure in the relationship
  • Establish guidelines for telephone calls and e-mail communication
  • Communicate regularly
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Act professionally
  • Contact the MBA Career Management Center if you are experiencing difficulties meeting with your mentor/mentee or if your situation changes, impacting your ability to participate.
  • Provide candid feedback to the MBA Career Management Center regarding your satisfaction with the program and the opportunities for improvement.
